“It’s a dangerous business, Frodo, going out your door. You step onto the road, and if you don’t keep your feet, there’s no knowing where you might be swept off to.”
Having been following Neil's Ögren's videos on social media, as soon as his book came out, I had to buy it. His work is so tidy, clean, precise, and very illustrative.
This book is a joy to read from so many points of view. First, it explains in a very straightforward way, techniques that are daunting even to experienced blacksmiths. It demystifies axe making and invites you to take the journey.
Secondly, it's just a nice read! It's a light read, with humour, wit and intelligence. Enjoyable even if you just like reading about axes and have no intention of making one.
On another, Nils' character (and I don't know him!) shines through with passion and warmth, very keen to help others by showing his own path. He holds a torch for you as you enter the dark tunnel.
I'm a knifemaker now, having been a farrier in a previous life. I dabble and stumble in making light axes, this book is like asking a friend how to solve those little niggling aspects of axe making and make me consider more serious ones.
Thanks Nils, just the book I wanted!
